Quote for the Day:

It is good to give thanks to the Lord,
to sing praise to they name, O Most High,
to declare they steadfast love in the morning,
and they faithfulness by night.

Psalm 92:1-2

Quote from the book, "101 Inspirational Stories of the Power of Prayer"

Note: If you have not been getting JoyNotes messages and you are using either AOL or Bellsouth and a few others.... they have updated their Spam Controls and JoyNotes is apparently a victim. I will leave this message up for a while.. because a lot of folks are wondering. Also for many people on these systems.. it doesn't work for me to email you back.. because my emails are blocked. So if you have another email address you might want to subscribe on that one.

Sometimes its the littlest things that hold us up. For instance I have a letter on my desk to send to my brother... and I really should have sent it today.... but I needed a one cent stamp to add to the postage stamp that worked just fine by itself a little while ago. So there it sits.

I tackled more important things all day .. supposedly... though really that letter needed to get in the mail... but I put it off because it needed a one cent stamp and even though there was probably one somewhere in this place that tiny bit of extra effort was just over the top.

I think that happens a lot. I rather expect it even happens in my spiritual life. I think that is rather scary.

Blessings of Peace and All Good,
Sister Patricia and all the Sisters

ALFRED LORD TENNYSON

He Is So Close to Me
Ann M. Sabocik
Hobart, Indiana

My niece is the mother of two boys, Zachary and Cody, both now deceased, who suffered from a genetic disease, San Filipo Type A. Those afflicted with this disease are not expected to live beyond their early teens. Zachary was turning thirteen in March of 1987. His brother, Cody, was six years younger. Their mother's grief while watching the steady decline in their health was heart wrenching, especially as she knew that nothing could be done medically to help them. Science offered little or no help for a possible cure. The San Filipo disease was not one that was given much public attention, and so little funding was allotted to research for a cure.

On March 15, 1987, a Mass was offered on behalf of the older brother, Zachary. His thirteenth birthday was the previous day. Being acutely aware that his entering the teen years was a warning that death was close, I had arranged for a Mass for Zachary, hoping and praying for a miracle to spare his life.

I had read Miracles Do Happen by Sr. Briege McKenna. In the book, Sr. Briege states that the best time to ask the Lord for a favor is during the Eucharist. After receiving Communion that day, I returned to my pew and immediately knelt and asked, "Lord, please heal Zachy."

Who Does God Save?

God wants to save us more than we could want it ourselves. His two conditions are:
1.) certain standards of living and
2.) a real desire on our part to be saved.

In the Beatitudes Jesus set forth standards for Christian living. He developed and synthesized the norms of living which would lead us to salvation. He promised a blessing for each one of these norms.

Secondly, Jesus wants us to realize that salvation is his gift to us. He also wants us to recognize our own helplessness and to call to him to save us.

St. Paul reminds us: "I repeat, it is owning to his favor that salvation is yours through faith. This is not your own doing, it is God's gift; neither is it a reward for anything you have accomplished . . ." (Eph 2:8-9)

On a personal note…

A drunken night

It was just not fair!

30th May was a busier than normal for a Saturday night. To mark the new regulations banning alcohol from London’s buses and Underground, some highly irresponsible individuals called for a massive party.

Daily Readings
Jun 3 Tue: Charles Lwanga & co., mts M

From today's readings: “Therefore, beloved, since you are forewarned, be on your guard not to be led into the error of the unprincipled and to fall from your own stability.... In every age, O Lord, You have been our refuge.... Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.”

What Belongs to God

Christ’s response to the question about paying taxes shouldn’t be categorized as merely a brilliant and politically astute comment which successfully dodges the main issue. No, for our Lord’s words were offered as an honest and complete answer, which did, however, obviously transcend the limitations of the insidious question.

I’ll leave it to others to argue about “what belongs to Caesar,” for the bigger issue is about “what belongs to God.” If you were to compile a quick inventory about who and what you are and what you have, how much would you reckon actually belongs to God?

When we remember that God created everything out of nothing, it’s hard to minimize, compartmentalize or otherwise downplay the legitimacy of the Lord’s claims on our entire existence! He gives us Life - and He asks us to repay Him with reverence for all life made in the divine image. He gives us Time - and He asks us to repay Him by keeping holy the weekly Sabbath. He gives us Hope - and asks us to repay Him by trumpeting that hope to others. He gives us Love, Mercy, and Forgiveness - and asks us to repay Him by sharing that with others.

I write these daily reflections as a humble offering and small part of rendering to God what belongs to Him. Your own time spent reading, reflecting, and taking action can be offered in the same spirit of giving to God what clearly belongs to Him!
