Quote for the Day:
What an extraordinary thing it is, the efficiency of prayer!
Like a queen, it has access at all times to the royal presence,
and can get whatever it asks for.

St. Therese of Lisieux
Quote from the book, "101 Inspirational Stories of the Power of Prayer"

I made a new card for today - Blessed Basil Hopko. A Slovakian bishop who spent 16 years in prison for the faith. If you get a chance look at the Peace Card and read the little bit I have there.. as well.. as follow through with the links. He was imprisoned and tortured for 16 years - one of the first tortures he underwent was to walk for 122 days with stopping.

Anyway - if you are going through some hard times.. or any difficulty at all - I think Bishop Basil would be a great one to include in your list of powerful intercessors! I just discovered him this evening while looking to see who was listed as Saints and Blesseds for the day from the Patron Saints Index. If you have never gone to this site.. it is a wonderful site.. I go there at least several times a week!

Book Update: Our book - 101 Inspirational Stories of the Power of Prayer - is now up on Amazon , Barnes and Nobles, etc. If you have a chance to leave a comment on one or both of those sites I would greatly appreciate it. Comments help a lot as people looking for good books and even bookstores will check out the reviews to help them decide on good books. Special thanks to Pam who was the first courageous person to leave a comment!

More things
are wrought by Prayer
than this world dreams of—

ALFRED LORD TENNYSON

My Husband's Dream
Grace R. Vega Cammeray,
New South Wales, Australia

Our family migrated to Australia last year and we attribute the success of our move to Mama Mary. Six weeks before our migration documents were to expire, we were informed by our local agent that if our permanent resident visa was not released within a month, our documents would expire and we would have to submit more recent documents. We were a bit anxious with our situation because at that time our visa processing had already been delayed by some local agencies.

With anxious hearts, our family prayed for guidance and direction for our situation. That night, my husband dreamed of someone instructing our family to pray the rosary, dedicating each bead to the migration officer who was in charge of processing our application. For the next three days, my whole family gathered and prayed the four mysteries of the holy rosary the way we were instructed to do so in my husband's dream. Towards the end of the third day, we received news from the migration officer who we had been praying for that he would release our visa within the week!

No Greater Shepherd

Psalm 79:13
Then we, your people and the sheep of your pasture
will give thanks to you forever;
through all generations we will declare your praise.

The image of the Lord as Shepherd and us as "the sheep of his pasture" bespeaks the loving care and concern that the Lord has for us. He guides and leads us along life's pathway toward our heavenly goal.

In return for such goodness, as we can do is thank and praise him all the days of our life.

What joy Jesus brings us when he says:
"I am the good shepherd;
the good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep."
(Jn 10:11)

Well, that was exciting

A couple of hours ago, the sky turned black and we hunkered down for what looked like it would be a whopper of a thunderstorm. As rain pounded the roof and wind bent the trees, Dan asked me to look up the weather report online. It was then that we saw the words:

Tornado Warning.

Very funny, I thought. Would someone please alert the local weatherman to the fact that this is New Hampshire? We endure suffocating winters that bring weaker humans to their breaking points. Come springtime, we drown in mud, fend off black flies, and battle bears in our garbage. All summer long, we refrain from blinking for fear of missing the entire season if we do. We do these things quite cheerfully in exchange for one simple guarantee: No tornadoes. Not in this state. Impossible.

Well, apparently not. The kids and I gathered flashlights and stayed away from the windows while Dan cleared access to the crawl space. We have no tornado cellar, you see, because we live in New Hampshire. Someone tell that to the weatherman, I thought again. And while you’re at it, tell it to the rain that is blowing sideways outside our front window.

Please God, I prayed as I considered the dingy darkness below. Not there. Do not make us go into the crawl space today.

And God is good. He did not make us go into the crawl space. After only about an hour of thunder, lightning, and torrential downpour, He extended His almighty hand and calmed the storm. He smiled down upon our humble state and brought back the sunshine.

And so now I return to email, to laundry, to dishes, and to taking for granted all that is sweetness and light.

Daily Readings
Jun 23 Mon: Ordinary Weekday

From today's readings: "Give up your evil ways and keep My commandments and statutes, in accordance with the entire law which I enjoined on your fathers and which I sent you by My servants the prophets.... Help us with Your right hand, O Lord, and answer us.... Stop judging, that you may not be judged...."

Truth or Consequence

Each of us has experienced in some way the negative consequences that haunt the betrayal of truth, whether one is simply caught in a lie, or life becomes restlessly complicated when enmeshed with what Sir Walter Scott called the "tangled webs we weave when first we practice to deceive."

Likewise, many of the biblical reflections (particularly in the Old Testament) drive home this insight of the dire aftermath of straying from the Truth of God. The First and Second Books of Kings not only chronicle the history of the monarchs in Israel and Judah, but the books also pound out blunt conclusions about how abandonment of true faith leads to disaster, as when Shalmaneser besieged Samaria around 725 BC.

To be sure, the risk of unpleasant consequences can hardly be the sole inspiration for our faith, which is meant to be a whole-hearted embrace of God's grace lovingly reaching out to us. But just as the sour complications of a lie can providentially be the bitter but best medicine to cure the liar, so the biblical debacles offer the sober but sure cure for the disease of anemic faith!

P.S. Please especially remember me in your family prayers as I celebrate today the anniversary of my ordination to the priesthood - 14 joyful and fulfilling years in this happy vocation of serving God and His people! Coincidentally, today is also the start of my final week as pastor of Our Lady of the Valley parish in Okanogan - my new assignment at Mt. Angel Seminary begins on July 1st!
