Quote for the Day: Reading is good, hearing is good, conversation and meditation are good; but then, they are only good at times and occasions, in a certain degree, and must be used and governed with such caution as we eat and drink and refresh ourselves, or they will bring forth in us the fruits of intemperance. But the spirit of prayer is for all times and occasions; it is a lamp that is to be always burning, a light to be ever shining: everything calls for it; everything is to be done in it and governed by it, because it is and means and wills nothing else but the totality of the soul -- not doing this or that, but wholly...given up to God to be where and what and how He pleases.
William Law Quote from the book, "101 Inspirational Stories of the Power of Prayer"

Note: If you have not been getting JoyNotes messages and you are using either AOL or Bellsouth and a few others.... they have updated their Spam Controls and JoyNotes is apparently a victim. I will leave this message up for a while.. because a lot of folks are wondering. Also for many people on these systems.. it doesn't work for me to email you back.. because my emails are blocked. So if you have another email address you might want to subscribe on that one.
Well once again - I waited until late to do the JoyNotes - so brain is fried and over easy.... not a good source for anything that even resembles a trace of spirituality - except for this spiritual quote which comes to mind sometimes when I think I would rather go to bed than do much else.
"The Lord will make you prosperous, even while you sleep." I always throw that out into the conversation sometimes - to kind of put us work focused folks into a different reality.
May you be richly blessed by Saint Barnabas today!
Blessings of Peace and all Good, Sister Patricia
Day Six
Memorare Novena Petition: For all those who are addicted and for those who suffer with them.
Pray Nine Times: Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

Stubborn Excuses
Leigh Ann M. Woodin
Georgetown, Delaware
One day I woke up and realized my life was not what I thought it should be. I had stopped using drugs, but alcohol remained in my life. Of course, that was not what was wrong with my life, I rationalized to myself. After all, alcohol was legal and everyone drank, right? I had taken a friend to a rehabilitation center and she was getting better, but I knew I didn't need treatment that extreme. After all, she always did more drugs and drank more alcohol than me.
Oh, those stubborn excuses I had, and the awful denial (isn't that a river in Egypt?). But slowly and surely the river of addiction I was swept up in started to veer off into a canal and I started to examine the people in my life who were overcoming their drug and alcohol dependencies. They were obviously feeling better, and I watched as they laughed and lived their lives in a much happier way. I was so jealous.

Rejoice in Me
by Msgr. David E. Rosage
Path to Peace
Psalm 34:15-16
Turn from evil, and do good;
seek peace, and follow after it.
The Lord has eyes for the just,
and ears for their cry.
Jesus invites us to follow him and become his disciples. We must strive to have the mind and heart of Jesus. The psalmist tells us how to begin this transformation: "Turn from evil, and do good."
He also encourages us to "seek peace, and follow after it." True peace flows from our personal relationship with the Lord. When we enjoy genuine peace, it naturally radiates through us to others. Then we become peacemakers.
Jesus pronounced a blessing for peacemakers: "Blest too the peacemakers; they shall be called sons of God." (Mt 5:9)

Me: Do you want a hot dog for lunch?
Raphael: Do we have rolls for them?
Me: Yes, I have a package of rolls here that I am defrosting.
Raphael: Oh yes then! I do want a frosted one!

Jun 11 Wed: Barnabas, ap M
From today's readings:
“ Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill!”
St. Barnabas
Barnabas, whose name means “son of encouragement” or “son of consolation,” was one of the first to excitedly approach the fledgling Church and declare himself “all in” (cf. Acts 4:36). He later put himself on the line to welcome Paul after his conversion (cf. Acts 9:27), and then, along with Paul, was designated by the Holy Spirit for missionary work (cf. 13:1-13).
As a pastor, I can attest to the wonderful difference a new “son of encouragement” can make, how a Christian community can suddenly thrive with renewed spiritual vitality when even just one person “filled with the Holy Spirit and faith” steps forward with a burning commitment to live the faith fully and help and encourage others to do the same!
As Christians, we are all brothers and sisters in Christ, so while our relationship with our Lord is always central, it’s not enough to just work on our own personal spiritual development and neglect our affect on others - we all need to contribute to the team spirit as well, following the example of St. Barnabas, so that we might even perhaps merit his nickname for our own commitment to console and encourage the Christians of this time and place.
