Quote for the Day:
When a Christian shuns fellowship with other Christians,
the devil smiles.
When he stops studying the Bible,
the devil laughs.
When he stops praying,
the devil shouts for joy.

Corrie Ten Boom

Note: If you have not been getting JoyNotes messages and you are using either AOL or Bellsouth and a few others.... they have updated their Spam Controls and JoyNotes is apparently a victim. I will leave this message up for a while.. because a lot of folks are wondering. Also for many people on these systems.. it doesn't work for me to email you back.. because my emails are blocked. So if you have another email address you might want to subscribe on that one.

My sister Euli and three kids came for a visit on their way to Seattle from Medford, Oregon. We have had a nice day, had our mom over for the first part of the day and dinner and then just spent time together the rest of the day. Now we are all like, "Where is our bed?" They are spending the night... along with their fun dog, Chester who runs around a mile a minute and is sure he is everybody's friend. And of course Shelley is delighted to have him over so they have both wore themselves out. Even their one little fish is spending the night because they are in moving transit - so they all get to stay. We don't often get visits from fish.

I got a notice from the printer today - who are also the ones sending out the free books... the first half will be going out tomorrow and the second half towards the end of the week. I didn't ask what the hold up was.. because I know from our own experience that it takes a lot to mail out a thousand packages! Course I've never done a thousand.. but hundreds.. and that was weeks.. so hey... this is not bad.

Blessings of Peace and all Good,
Sister Patricia

Day Five

Memorare Novena
Petition:
For all those who are addicted and for those who suffer with them.

Pray Nine Times:
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known
that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help,
or sought thine intercession was left unaided.

Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee,
O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come,
before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate,
despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me.
Amen.

More things
are wrought by Prayer
than this world dreams of—

ALFRED LORD TENNYSON

Ten Minute Meditation
Sister Patricia Proctor
Spokane, Washington

Today you are` going to visit your house—your spiritual house. What is it like? Is it big or small? Does it have many doors, many windows? Is it light or dark? Invite Jesus to walk with you into your house. Explore it together. Are there rooms you do not want to enter? That’s okay. Today, just go where you want to go and do what you want in your house.

What are you feeling?
Happy or sad?
Excited or apprehensive?
Whatever you feel is fine, but share your house with Jesus.

Prayer when time is completed:

Jesus,
thank you for coming to my house.
Thank you for spending time
with me,
without words
or thought
or judgment of any kind.
Thank you Jesus for coming to my house
just as it is.
Amen.

Joy from Meditation
Rejoice in Me
by Msgr. David E. Rosage

Primary Priority

Psalm 7:11-12
A shield before me is God,
who saves the upright of heart;
A just judge is God,
a God who punishes day by day.

To live a good and holy life we must be single-minded in doing the will of God at all times. Many around us would try to dissaude us from the road we have chosen and to abandon the standards we set as our goal. We must dare to be different.

Jesus gives us the example. He broke with the culture of his day because he had only one principal concern, and that was to do the will of his Father at all times.

Jesus tells us how happy we will be when we make the will of God our first priority. It is a sure path to salvation. "Blest are the single-hearted for they shall see God." (Mt 5:8)

Kicking the Can

Do you drink Diet Coke? I do. Tons, actually. And I have decided that I do not like this about myself.

I first started drinking Diet Coke in college. It was an “acquired taste” one of my girlfriends told me, and I aimed to acquire it. That didn’t take long. Soon I was drinking several cans a day. I decided to give it up for Lent that first year and was rewarded with the biggest Ash Wednesday headache I have ever had the occasion to “offer up.”

On a personal note…

Sunday afternoon

100_2054.JPG Admittedly it was Sunday afternoon, with the warm sun shining brightly and enticingly over the Thames, inviting even the most reluctant soul out-of-doors and, admittedly, St. Benet’s church is inconspicuous, the haunt of the Welsh-speaking Church of Wales (even if in London), but the door stood open invitingly.

Curious because its name suggested considerably greater antiquity than its architecture would have implied, I decided to explore.

The minister and his congregation were putting their heart and soul into the celebration of Evensong…but the congregation consisted of one lady and an unseen organist.

The trio offered a laudable example of commitment and perseverance. It must take a fair amount of faith and willpower to continue in such a situation. What happens if one person does not come to church? What if the minister himself is, for some reason or other, unable to participate? Presumably Evensong would have continued in the absence of an organist, but if a congregation is only three people, there are not many options available to the parish. There are not many people in London who speak Welsh and so the numbers of those attending any church services are always going to be small.

Yet small is beautiful. Tucked away, out of sight of the passing world, there were three people praising God on a Sunday afternoon. May God bless them…

And may he bless you, too.

Daily Readings
Jun 10 Tue: Ordinary Weekday

From today's readings: She was able to eat for a year, and Elijah and her son as well; the jar of flour did not go empty, nor the jug of oil run dry, as the LORD had foretold through Elijah.... When I call, answer me, O my just God, You who relieve me when I am in distress; Have pity on me, and hear my prayer!... You are the salt of the earth....

Visible Faith

One of the most insidious facets of modern secularism is its insistence that religion belongs only to the private sphere. Any country, communist or capitalist, dictatorship or democracy, will happily accommodate any anemic faith that quietly keeps to itself and doesn=t dare to challenge public policy.

But such a mindset cannot be called freedom of religion, because it essentially attempts to normalize freedom from religion! Authentic Christian faith simply cannot be short-circuited and confined to private matters. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus explains that His disciples are not to hypocritically divorce their private practices from their public positions, rather, AYou are the salt of the earth.... You are the light of the world!@

The splendor of the truth, like a city on a mountain, cannot be hidden. But sadly, it can be ignored, avoided, and even contemptuously derided and denied, as secularism arrogantly tries to do. But if our Christian faith is worth anything to us, then it certainly is worth sharing with others, and bringing the light of this faith to scatter the darkness of modern doubt and confusion.
