Quote for the Day:
Christians must lean on the cross of Christ
just as travelers lean on a staff
when they begin a long journey.
They must have the passion of Christ
deeply imbedded in their minds and hearts,
because only from it can they derive
peace, grace, and truth.
St. Anthony of Padua

The Mom Report: Saw my mom today and she is doing pretty well. I am hoping, hoping, hoping that she will be able to go back to her adult home - but not sure. It looks like it will be two months at least in the nursing center. But time goes very fast.. so who knows.
Today I arrived in time to see her getting some therapy. She gets therapy five days a week which is wonderful - but because her leg was so badly broken and parts of it are not pinned together but just sort of floating - she cannot put any weight on it for some time. Still, its amazing how they work with her. They were teaching her how to scoot on a little plastic board from her wheelchair to a bed - using just the one good leg. The dementia part is what makes it a bit challenging but she did well. Wonderful how these therapists come up with all sorts of neat things to accomplish mobility and improvement of hard situations!
I also saw how they used the "lift" to get her from the wheelchair to the bathroom. Was rather amazing. They have sort of a sling that fits behind her.. and then over and under her arms and over and under her legs.. and then it just lifts her up and off she goes! Reminded me of a spider carrying its prey off ... but really is a wonderful thing. Here's a page with some lifts to sort of give you an idea.
With all these kinds of things.. it really is possible to take care of people even at home. I am impressed.
About the new site. Well... it was supposed to be live today. And I talked to the designer today.. and Luke was excited to go live with it today, but he said it would be later in the day. Now its moving sort of later into the evening... and well.... I don't think its going to happen. I'm sort of getting that impression.
Anyway... its not all finished.. but I said.. its never going to be ALL finished. I never get ALL finished with anything... but its good enough to "Go With" while we keep on working! So... stay tuned.. someday soon....
Blessings of Peace and Joy!

The Math Challenge
Della L. D'Cruz Abu Dhabi,
United Arab Emirates
My two daughters, Chivonne and Chantelle, have always struggled in math and in any subjects related to math. Last September as the new school year began, I started praying that they would overcome their weaknesses in those areas, and that the years ahead would go well for them. In the past, their difficulty in those classes sometimes brought their grand totals down, and it often made them nervous and afraid of those types of subjects.
Chivonne, my oldest daughter, is an eighteen-year-old sophomore at American University at Dubai. She is studying business administration and is taking classes such as quantitative analysis and accounting. At first, her quantitative analysis class was especially difficult for her, and she dreaded her first quiz. To her delight, when she actually sat down and took the quiz, everything flowed smoothly and she scored a seven out of a possible ten. This success gave her much needed confidence, and now that her fear is gone, she is finding that she understands the material better.

Rejoice in Me
by Msgr. David E. Rosage
Source of Joy
Psalm 51:9-10
Cleanse me of sin with hyssop, that I may be purified;
wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Let me hear the sounds of joy and gladness.
The Old Testament psalmist begged for the purifying rite with hyssop, but Jesus has given us a more powerful sign of purification.
The words of absolution in the sacrament of penance can well be "the sounds of joy and gladness" which we, as the psalmist, long to hear.
Jesus instituted the sacrament of penance when he said: "Receive the Holy Spirit, If you forgive men's sins, they are forgiven them; if you hold them bound, they are held bound." (Jn 20:22-23)

On a personal note…
Pause and Pray
Check out the newly-updated website at http://pauseandpray.com
It still has some distance to cover, but the ‘old’ site has a new look. My prayer is that you will find it a useful resource as you try to find God in the events of daily life.
God bless,
Sr. Janet

2008 Jul 25 : James, ap F
From today's readings:
"We hold this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassing power may be of God and not from us.... The LORD has done great things for us; we are glad indeed.... The Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many...."
St. James the Greater
Since there were two with the name "James" among the Twelve Apostles, it's easy to get them both mixed up. One of them is mentioned in Mark 15:40 as "James the less," but this diminutive title most likely refers to his age or height, not his relative importance. So in contrast, the saint commemorated today, the other James, the son of Zebedee and brother of John, is often called "the greater," but again, that flattering title probably just reflects his greater age or height in comparison to the other James.
This St. James and his brother John and St. Peter were privileged to be the closest companions of Jesus among all the apostles, for the three of them are mentioned as alone with the Lord on a number of occasions, including the raising of Jairus' daughter, the Transfiguration, and the Agony in Gethsemane.
The Acts of the Apostles also records (12:2) that James was the first martyr among the apostles. He was put to death by Herod Agrippa I, and since that monarch had a short reign, the year of James' martyrdom is well established as 42 AD.
