Quote for the Day:
To pray is nothing more involved than to open the door,
giving Jesus access to our needs
and permitting Him to exercise His own power
in dealing with them.

Ole Kristian O. Hallesby
Quote from the book, "101 Inspirational Stories of the Power of Prayer"

Today - (Wednesday) my mom gets her cast. I hope it goes well. I'm sure it will as God has managed everything so beautifully to this point.... but my worry genes like to kick in at the slightest opportunity!

The new card site is getting very close. I'm excited about it and nervous at the same time. Isn't it just amazing how many things I can find to be nervous about? Such talent I have. I downloaded the program called "Camtasia" so that I can make quick and easy tutorials on how to use the new site. The new site is actually even more simple than the present one.. but of course most of us already know how to use the present one.. so anything new.. always can use a little help.

So stay tuned.. because it is going to happen!

Note about Music with Joynotes - because some of the music takes a long time to download for some browsers - I have changed the setting so that it does not start automatically. If you want to hear the music click the button to start at the top right of the page. I hope this helps those who were having long, long download problems!

More things
are wrought by Prayer
than this world dreams of—

ALFRED LORD TENNYSON

Ten Minute Meditation
Sister Patricia Proctor, OSC

Push open the little wooden gate that leads into your garden. Notice how easily it opens. A light touch from your hand and it gently swings back so you can enter.

Today as you enter your garden you notice there is a wheelbarrow. There is a small tree in a clay pot in the wheelbarrow. You notice a little tag tied to the branches. Hmmmm. It must tell what kind of a tree it is. Go over and read what the tag says.

The tag says, "This is your tree of Hope. Plant in sunny spot and water it daily."

In the wheelbarrow there is also a small shovel. Take the shovel and look about for a place to plant your tree. Think about an area in your life that you would most like to see a change.

On the tree there is another little tag. This one has nothing on it. Take a pen out of your pocket and write on the tag the hope you are longing for.

Plant your tree. Give it some water. Now leave it to God to bring the sunshine it will need and the rain and the nutrients of the earth to supply its roots. Every once in a while visit your tree and talk to it. Encourage it.

Prayer when time is completed:

Dear God,
thank you for this gift of hope.
No matter how small
my hope may be today,
I know under your love
and care it will grow
as long as I plant it
and let it take root.
Amen.

Prayer of Repentance

Psalm 51:3-4
Have mercy on me, O God, in your goodness;
in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense.
Throughly wash me from my guilt
and of my sin cleanse me.

Jesus came into the world as our Savior and Redeemer. As we appeal to his mercy and compassion, Jesus is pleased because we are acknowledging him for what he wants to be most—Redeemer and healer.

Our attitude also bespeaks our openess to the transformation he wants to effect with us.

With the tax collector, let us pray: "O God, be merciful to me, a sinner." (Lk 18:13)

Faith & Family Live!

Oh, HAPPY DAY!

At great long last I can share with you all something that we at Faith & Family Magazine have been working on behind the scenes for months …

The Faith & Family website has gotten a beautiful makeover and it now includes a magazine archive and a group blog — Faith & Family Live!
http://faithandfamilylive.com/

It is our sincere hope that Faith & Family Live! will become a daily stop for Catholic moms seeking resources, encouragement, support, and companionship as they embrace their vocations to marriage and motherhood. We plan to share personal struggles and triumphs here, challenges and joys, and also the lighter side of Catholic living.

We currently have the two most recent issues of the magazine (May/June 2008 and July/August 2008) available to all visitors, but we will eventually have all of our back issues archived online and they will be available to subscribers only.

The group blog, however, will remain open to everyone. I’m honored to be blogging there with Lisa Hendey, Rachel Balducci, Arwen Mosher, and Rebecca Teti. I am so happy to invite you all to visit us at Faith & Family Live!

Come on over! Join the conversation! Check us out!

Daily Readings
Jul 16 Wed: Ordinary Weekday

From today's readings: "Thus says the LORD: Woe to Assyria!... The Lord will not abandon His people.... No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal Him."

The Answer to the Problem of Evil

Yesterday, it was mentioned that King Ahaz of Judah sought salvation from the pagan Assyrian empire, and that fateful choice led to disaster for both the northern and southern kingdoms. The oracle in chapter 10 of Isaiah is against Assyria itself: while the Assyrian invasion served God's purpose in providing chastisement for His faithless people in Israel and Judah, the cocky pride of the Assyrians would soon lead to their own downfall (which occurred about a century later).

The rise and victories of evil forces can be unsettling to people of faith in God, who is all-good and all-powerful. But, since God is all-good and all-powerful, how come Evil exists at all, and why are forces of good defeated at times? This, in a nutshell, is the "Problem of Evil" which has troubled philosophers, theologians, and many other people unsettled by victories of evil forces.

No trite explanation provides a satisfactory resolution to this "Problem of Evil," but the issue is wrestled with often throughout the Bible (such as today's prophecy for Assyria) and comes to its sharpest focus in the Cross of Christ, and so, God's ineffable answer to that Sign of contradiction is our solution to the problem of Evil!
