Quote for the Day:
If a man wants God to hear his prayer quickly, then before
he prays for anything else, even his own soul, when he stands
and stretches out his hands towards God, he must pray with all
his heart for his enemies. Through this action God will hear
everything that he asks.
Abba Zeno

Quote from the book, "101 Inspirational Stories of the Power of Prayer"

Life always has its little surprises. And sometimes those little surprises are not of the best kind! On Friday I discovered through an email that I had left out two of the prize winning stories. So first you tell someone, not only is their story going to be in the book.. but that's its a Winner! And then you have a mix-up and you send them a "I'm sorry your story is not accepted letter" and then weeks later you find out your mistake.... after the book has been at the printer for several weeks and then.... you stew on that over the weekend..... and then you call up the printer and find out its NOT To Late! Stop the presses .. there is still time to make some changes. Squeeze in a bit here.. remove some stuff here.. and yes.... I think we can get them in.

So - that was what has been going on today. What's been going on with you?

Love and Prayers,
Sr. Patricia

Creation's Testimony

Every bud unfolding into a beautiful flower, every scarcely audible peep from a cracked egg releasing new life, every cry of a newborn babe startles un into the realization that our gracious God is sharing life with his creatures.

The massive mountains, the expansive sea, the azure blue sky crescented with a magnificent sunset show forth the beauty of the Lord dimly reflected in his handiwork.

The Lord's creative genius fills us with silent wonder and awe. Then our heart filled to overflowing joyously bursts forth in praise, honor, and glory to the God we dare to call Father.

Breakfast/granola bars for everyone!

When you think you have finally found the answer to your healthy eating worries, along comes a dietitian to throw you into a muddle once again. In my practice, working with diabetics and obese clients, we often use a variety of breakfast/ granola bars to evaluate food labels. It is overwhelming the vast difference in ingredients. You can find bars that are mainly a foil wrapped cookie, those that try to meet your daily fiber needs, those that could replace an entire meal based on calorie content. When choosing your bar, consider what you are using it for.

Diabetic emergency food: for those who need to carry a quick fix carbohydrate load for lows you should be looking for a bar that provides between 15-24 grams of carbohydrate, 7-10 grams of protein, less than 8 grams of sugar, and 3 or more grams of fiber.

Snack: hungry kids/adults who just want a quick and easy snack for on the road, on a hike, or between meals, look for a lower calorie version that provides no more than 130 calories per serving. If you can get 3 or more grams of fiber and a little protein, consider this a healthier option over a cookie. Combine with a glass of low fat milk for a more nutrient dense snack.

Energy bar: Bars with 35 or more grams of carbohydrates should be reserved for those who are actively exercising for more than one hour. These are very high in carbohydrate. This would be the equivalent of 2 slices of bread but may contain enough sugar to equal a midsize candy bar. Some of these bars can have upwards of 300 calories. You would need to do an hour of high aerobic exercise or bicycling to burn off these calories. Not a weight loss option.

Lunch treat: if the bar is a dessert option, consider one of the lower calorie cookie type bars. Tasty and healthier than a frosted filled cookie, but still not a ‘health’ food .

If you need help understanding food labels, check out this website provided free from the FDA: http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~acrobat/nutfacts.pdf for step by step guides to reading and interpreting food labels. Use the label, you’ll be amazed at what you can learn.

On a personal note…

“We need to know”

madeleine2.jpg There was a press conference immediately following their meeting with Pope Benedict at the Wednesday General Audience. It was then that I had my first contact with Kate and Gerry McCann, although Kate and I attended the same school (some years apart) and her parents live close to my own family.

When I saw Kate and Gerry, I was utterly convinced of their innocence, and remain so after one year of frequent conversations with Kate’s parents. I have been deeply humbled by their faith and courage, the persistence of their prayers even when the days have been dark and pain-filled.

Daily Readings
Apr 29 Tue: Catherine of Siena, v, dr M

From today's readings: “He brought them up into his house and provided a meal and with his household rejoiced at having come to faith in God.... In the presence of the angels I will sing Your praise; I will worship at Your holy temple, and give thanks to Your name.... But I tell you the truth, it is better for you that I go. For if I do not go, the Advocate will not come to you. But if I go, I will send Him to you.”

Overturning the World’s Judgment

Having spent three years in daily communion with Jesus, the apostles must indeed have been filled with sadness at the idea that their Lord would be leaving them. And yet, Jesus insisted that it was better for Him to go, for His departure would not mean the absence of divine presence in their lives, but rather, His return to Heaven would be the catalyst for the sending of the Holy Spirit. And the Holy Spirit would disseminate and amplify the experience of God’s presence!

Moreover, the Advocate would completely reverse the world’s judgment on Jesus “in regard to sin and righteousness and condemnation.” For the world impugned Jesus as a sinful blasphemer and insurrectionist, but the works of the Holy Spirit testify that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and so, the sin is found among those who stubbornly refuse to believe in Him. And the world maintained that righteousness demanded the conviction of Jesus, but the Resurrection and Ascension certifies instead the perfect righteousness of Jesus. And while the world condemned Jesus, the divine and definitive judgment instead establishes the eternal condemnation of the diabolic ruler of the world.

In other words, the world’s judgment and view of things is, in the end, only transitory, even when that seems momentarily so daunting and entrenched. But since God’s judgment and view is eternal and ultimate, we Christians are reminded to adopt only the divine criteria as the guiding standard for our lives!
